According to “Uzavtosanoat,” in 2016 the automotive industry of Uzbekistan produced marketable products worth UZS4.2 trillion soums, which is 508 percent more than in 2015. In physical terms, plans are afoot to produce 228,600 units of passenger cars and 5,500 trucks and buses in the period 2015-2020. According to President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, in the future the automotive industry plans to abandon the use of the so-called “screwdriver assembly.”
According to him, in the past three years,
the automotive industry production decreased by 2.8 times. This fact is a serious impact on the growth of the industry and the gross domestic product. In addition, imports exceed exports by many times, and the level of localization is less than 20 percent. In addition, despite the reduction in cost by an average of 10 percent across the industry, Uzbek automotive products are not competitive in the foreign markets due to their high cost.
The structure of the automotive company of Uzbekistan includes four production assembly facilities. The largest of them is “GM Uzbekistan,” which manufactures passenger cars. It was established by “General Motors” and “Uzavtosanoat” in March 2008. The two companies own 25 and 75 percent of the equity, respectively.
According to the recent reports of “Uzavtosanoat,” as of January 1, 2017, more than 24,100 people were employed at automotive enterprises. During the presentation at the Tenth International Industrial Fair and Cooperation Exchange in 2015, it was noted that the company employed approximately 27 thousand people and had a turnover of 4 billion dollars.
