Development Of Turkmenistan's Transport System Discussed In Ashgabat

Monday, July 3, 2017 - 13:14

On June 20, Ashgabat hosted a regular meeting of the Security Council of Turkmenistan chaired by President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov. The main theme of the event was developing transport corridors and ensuring international transport security. As noted during the meeting, taking into account Turkmenistan's geographical location and sufficiently high rates of development of its national economy, in the future the country can become a transcontinental strategic link that connects the economic systems of several regions.

As an example, they mentioned the promising transport corridors “North-South” and "”East-West,” which would connect Central Asia, South Asia and Europe. They also noted the need to improve and consolidate the already existing transport systems (for example, the TRACEKA). This is especially important due to the increasing flow of goods from Europe to Asia through the Caucasus, and vice versa. Thus, in the near future the economy of the neighboring regions will require new infrastructure.

According to the Turkmen President, the newly built railway and motorways will be integrated into the international transport system. For example, designed in 2014, the Kazakhstan-Turkmenistan-Iran railway will eventually transport more than 10 million tons of various transnational cargo annually. In addition, a new transport corridor from Uzbekistan is currently being projected through Turkmenistan and Iran to Oman, to the Persian Gulf. According to experts, this route is one of the most optimal.

As pointed out during the meeting, the national customs legislation is now being revised taking into account the legal norms adopted in the world, as well as advanced methods of training of specialists.
