President Of Tajikistan Meets UN Secretary General

On June 11, Tajik President Emomali Rahmon met UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in Dushanbe. According to the press service of the head of the Tajik state, the parties called the cooperation with the United Nations “important in terms of strengthening Tajikistan's statehood, implementing economic reforms, and ensuring sustainable development.” They stressed that today Tajikistan has a total of 23 representative offices of various UN programs, offices, and specialized projects.


The parties also discussed the issues related to the topic of cooperation in the implementation of the national development strategy of Tajikistan in the period until 2030. It was prepared with the participation of experts of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). The President of Tajikistan noted the importance of cooperation with the UN in the implementation of transport, energy, communications and agricultural projects. In addition, the parties also exchanged views on the issues of achieving peace in Afghanistan.


In turn, the Secretary General of the United Nations highly appreciated the role of Tajikistan in addressing issues related to water resources in the region and around the world, as well as in terms of international initiatives on environmental issues. He also stressed the timeliness and importance of Tajikistan's global initiatives in this area.


According to the press service of the President of Tajikistan, E. Rahmon and A. Guterres also considered the issues related to the strengthening of global stability and security.


Prior to that, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres had already visited Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan as part of his tour across Central Asia. In particular, in Uzbekistan, he and President Shavkat Mirziyoyev discussed the issues related to mitigating the consequences of the Aral Sea ecological disaster.
