Kazakhstan To Start Producing High-Octane Gasoline In July 2017

In July 2017, the Shymkent oil refinery (Kazakhstan) will start producing high-octane grades of gasoline. The press service of the leadership of South-Kazakhstan Province reported the news on June 14. According to the report, the Shymkent refinery will soon complete the first stage of modernization and reconstruction of the enterprise. In particular, this stage included building and commissioning an isomerization unit for light gasoline fractions, and equipping it with a preliminary hydrotreating unit for hydrocarbon feedstock.

In addition, there was commissioned a plant for production of sulfur with a capacity of 4,000 tons per year. A hydrotreating unit for diesel fuel was reconstructed; a unit for hermetically sealed light oil products and a number of other factory infrastructure facilities were built and put into operation.

After the first stage of the Shymkent refinery project is completed, the company will be able to produce diesel fuel and high-octane gasoline of ecological classes K4 and K5 (they are the analogues of Euro-4 and Euro-5). The production of these types of petroleum products will begin at the Shymkent oil refinery in H2 2017.

In addition, the annual volume of production will increase by 460,000 tons for high-octane gasoline, by 226,000 tons for diesel fuel, and by 27,000 tons for aviation fuel.

During the second stage of modernization, it is planned to build new processing units and to reconstruct the existing ones, to restore the designed capacity of the refinery (6 million tons per year) and increase the depth of oil refining. It is also necessary to build or modernize gasoline hydrotreatment units, as well as catalytic cracking and gas demercaptanization units; to start production of the ETBE additive (which raises the octane number); to establish a facility for sulfur production, hydrogen purification, etc.
