On June 11, Astana hosted the ministerial conference “Ensuring Sustainable Energy Development” as a prelude to the eighth international sustainable energy development forum. These two events are to last for four days until June 14. They were organized as part of the international specialized exhibition EXPO 2017 taking place in the capital of Kazakhstan under the motto “Energy of the Future.” Their main themes were energy security, the interconnection of energy, food and climate, infrastructure and trade, as well as the development of renewable energy in the regional context.

According to the organizers of these events, the discussions expected to take place within the framework of the ministerial conference and the eighth forum will help to understand the possibilities for the UN system's assistance to both countries and the business community in the sustainable energy development.

Ministers, leading world experts in the energy sector, and high-level delegates will exchange views on the role of regional cooperation and its importance in planning, on the need to apply interrelated approaches and solutions for the implementation of the Agenda for Sustainable Development in the period 2017-2030. The Ministers of Energy of Russia and Kazakhstan, Alexander Novak and Kanat Bozumbayev, as well as the Minister of Industry, Energy and Mineral Resources of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Khalid al-Falih took part in this event.

The first result of the ministerial conference was the decision to establish an international center of “green” technologies in Astana. This project will be implemented with the support of a number of organizations that are part of the UN. “The forms and scale of this center's activities will be determined later,” Kazakhstan's energy minister Kanat Bozumbaev noted.
