Chairman of the Kazakh Statistics Agency Alikhan Smailov has been elected to the UN Global Steering Committee of the Global Strategy to Improve Agricultural and Rural Statistics, the Statistics Agency reported on Monday.

"During the 47th meeting of the Council of the Heads of Statistical Services of states-participants of the Commonwealth of Independent States held on April 19-20, 2012 in Moscow, the Chairman of the Agency on Statistics of the Republic of Kazakhstan Mr. Alikhan Smailov was elected to the UN Global Steering Committee of the Global Strategy to Improve Agricultural and Rural Statistics," the Agency said.

The Global Strategy to Improve Agricultural and Rural Statistics (Global Strategy) is the result of an extensive consultation process with national and international statistical organizations as well as with agricultural ministries and other governmental institutions.

The purpose of the Global Strategy is to provide the framework for national and international statistical systems to produce the basic data to guide the decision making required for the 21st century.

The Global Steering Committee, which is the ultimate decision-making body, furnishes strategic guidance and oversight for implementation of the Global Strategy. It is composed of country representatives of the regional steering committees, the chair of the UN Statistical Commission, regional participating partners and other leading international organizations involved in agricultural and rural statistics.

In the Global Steering Committee the CIS region is represented by two members: head of one of the national statistical offices and head of one of the agriculture ministries of the CIS countries.
