Attack on border guard in South Kazakhstan leaves one dead

Five unknown people attacked a lieutenant of Yntymak border post in the South Kazakhstan region, Kazinform reported referring to the Border Service of Kazakhstan National Security Committee.

"A hooligan attack on a lieutenant of Yntymak border post of Saryagash border detachment was committed on Sunday, June 24, 2012 at 17:30 in Kokterek village of South Kazakhstan region," the Border Service said.

Five unidentified people drove up to the officer, attacked him and started beating, threatening with a pistol and trying to drag him into the car. The officer fired warning shots into the air and then into the car wheels. The attackers left the car and fled the scene of the attack.
The fire hit a bystander - a local resident, who died in hospital due to gunshot wound.

The officer received injuries of varying severity.

The law enforcement agencies are carrying out investigation into the attack and taking measures to identify and detent the attackers.
