Iranian Science Minister to be questioned in parliament "due to unprofessionalism"

Wednesday, November 6, 2013 - 18:00

Iranian Minister of Science, Research and Technology, Reza Faraji Dana will be questioned in Iranian parliament, Member of parliament's Education and Research Commission, Abdolvahid Fayyazi said, IRNA news agency reported on Nov. 6.

According to the report, some 60 MPs have signed the question bill.

Fayyazi said that the issue of questioning the minister came up due to his unprofessional appointments of deputy minister and other officials.

Iranian parliament approved Faraji Dana as Minister of Science, Research and Technology on October 27, after which he appointed Jafar Tofighi and Jafar Mili-Monfared as Senior Advisor to Minister and deputy Minister respectively.

Mili-Monfared was president Hassan Rouhani`s first nominee as Science Minister which was rejected by parliament in August. Then Rouhani appointed Tofighi as acting Minister of Science, Research and Technology.

Tofighi made a number of reforms and changes to roll back the hardline university policies of the ex-president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad (2005-2013).

He had also begun to invite back professors who had been forced into retirement by Ahmadinejad's administration. Tofighi was not nominated by Rouhani for the permanent post of minister after he was seriously criticised by extremist MPs in the parliament.

According to IRNA, some 150 MPs also have issued a letter to Rouhani criticizing Faraji Dana`s appointments on Nov.6.

They stated that Faraji Dana`s appointments negatively affects the relations between government and the parliament, asking Rouhani to intervene in the issue.
