Twelve people died and at least 13 were missing Monday after a blast ripped through an explosives workshop in the eastern Chinese province of Shandong, dpa reported according to state media.

The explosion scattered rubble up to 200 metres away, killing at least a dozen people at the factory owned by the Poly Explosives (Jinan) Company in Shandong's Caofan township, the semi-official China News Service reported.

Earlier reports said firefighters had rescued nine workers and recovered five bodies.

Storms and torrential rain caused widespread flooding and landslides that left at least 33 people dead and 12 missing in southern China, the government said on Friday, dpa reported.

At least 19 died and 11 were missing in the worst-hit province of Guangdong after rainstorms swept across most parts of southern China from Tuesday, the Ministry of Civil Affairs reported.

The storms, floods and landslides destroyed 2,675 houses and affected some 650,000 people in Guangdong, provincial officials said.

President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhammadov signed a decree on the opening of the Embassy of Turkmenistan in Japan (Tokyo City), the document, which was made public, says.

China's bird flu death toll rises to 20

Two more people have died from a new strain of avian influenza, bringing to 20 the number of deaths from the H7N9 virus, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Sunday, Reuters reported.

Chinese authorities have notified the WHO of six new cases, bringing the total to 102. Of those, 70 are still in hospital and 12 have been discharged. Five of the new cases were in Zhejiang province and one was in Shanghai.

"Until the source of infection has been identified, it is expected that there will be further cases of human infection with the virus in China," the WHO said In a statement.

At least 5 people in Iran have died after being treated with Chinese penicillin, head of Iranian Society of experts on internal diseases, doctor Iraj Khosravinia said, Young Journalists' club website reported.

"A 40 year old man with a throat disease was injected with Penicillin, after prescription from his physician," Khosravinia said.

"After the injection, he started having chills, fever, his blood pressure level dropped, and he died in 15 minutes."

Cooling system stops at Japan's Fukushima reactor

The cooling system for the spent fuel storage at one of the reactors of Japan's stricken Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant stopped working Friday, a news report said.

An alarm went off at 2:27 pm indicating a problem with electrical equipment in reactor number 3, Kyodo News agency quoted the Nuclear Regulation Authority as saying, dpa reported.

Reactors 1, 2 and 3 of the plant's six were severely damaged in the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami, which cut off the cooling to the main reactor cores, leading to explosions and radiation leaks.
