Former Turkish President Suleyman Demirel has been charged with participating in a military coup that took place on February 28, 1997, Anadolu agency reported on Wednesday.

The charges against Demirel were brought through the Criminal Court of Erzurum province.
A number of high ranking Turkish military including Generals Cevik Bir, Erol Ozkasnak and others have already been imprisoned over this case.

On Tuesday Turkish Security Forces carried out a large scale operation against drug traffickers in the Eastern Province of Diyarbekir, Anadolu agency reported.

According to the statement, 24 teams from the Turkish Gendarmerie and three units from the Anti-Drug department of the Secretariat General on Turkey's security participated in the operation. Three helicopters were also involved.

It is reported the operation is directed against drug traffickers connected with the terrorist Kurdistan Workers' Party.

"The medical report showed that Atakan died after he fell from the roof of the building," minister added. "The police are not involved in his death."


Syria will still have problems after chemical weapons are transferred under international control, Turkish President Abdullah Gul told media today, TRT Haber, TV channel reported.

"The West and in particular the U.S. must understand that after the chemical weapons are transferred under international control, Syria will still have problems," he added. "A more effective approach is required."

According to him, more than 100,000 people were killed during the Syrian crisis and this must be stopped as soon as possible.

Turkey's ambassador to Cairo, who was recalled to Ankara due to deteriorating Turkish-Egyptian relations, will return to Egypt today, Hürriyet newspaper reported on Wednesday.
