Former Turkish President Suleyman Demirel has been charged with participating in a military coup that took place on February 28, 1997, Anadolu agency reported on Wednesday.

The charges against Demirel were brought through the Criminal Court of Erzurum province.
A number of high ranking Turkish military including Generals Cevik Bir, Erol Ozkasnak and others have already been imprisoned over this case.

On Tuesday Turkish Security Forces carried out a large scale operation against drug traffickers in the Eastern Province of Diyarbekir, Anadolu agency reported.

According to the statement, 24 teams from the Turkish Gendarmerie and three units from the Anti-Drug department of the Secretariat General on Turkey's security participated in the operation. Three helicopters were also involved.

It is reported the operation is directed against drug traffickers connected with the terrorist Kurdistan Workers' Party.

An earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale hit the Tuten region, Mush province in the east of Turkey at night, Anadolu reported today.

No causalities or damage were reported.

An earthquake measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale hit Turkey' eastern province of Mush on September 16.

Turkey is located in a seismically active zone and earthquakes, which often lead to the loss of human life, occur here very frequently. The strongest fluctuations in the Earth's crust in this country were recorded in 1999 in the Marmara Sea. The magnitude of tremors then was 7.4; about 18,000 people died.

After the release of a UN report, Turkey claimed to be certain that the chemical weapons attack in Damascus on Aug. 21 was committed by the Syrian regime, both in a written statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Tuesday's statements from Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu Today`s Zaman reported.

Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu met Sept.10 with the families of two Turkish pilots kidnapped last month in Beirut in a case linked to the Syrian conflict Hurriyetdailynews reported.

After the meeting, İrfan Medet Akpinar, brother of kidnapped pilot Murat Akpinar, said the minister shared up-to-date information about the situation of the pilots.

Protester Ahmed Atakan died in Hatay province after he fell from the roof. The Turkish police was not involved in his death, Turkish Interior Minister Muammer Guler said today, TRT Haber TV channel reported.

"The medical report showed that Atakan died after he fell from the roof of the building," minister added. "The police are not involved in his death."

Syria will still have problems after chemical weapons are transferred under international control, Turkish President Abdullah Gul told media today, TRT Haber, TV channel reported.

"The West and in particular the U.S. must understand that after the chemical weapons are transferred under international control, Syria will still have problems," he added. "A more effective approach is required."

According to him, more than 100,000 people were killed during the Syrian crisis and this must be stopped as soon as possible.

Thanks to the transport and energy projects jointly implemented by Turkey, Azerbaijan and Georgia, the Caspian Sea region will gain a strategic significance in the world, Turkish president Abdullah Gul said at the international forum dedicated to transport and communication held in Istanbul on Thursday, TRT Haber reported.

According to the Turkish president, the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway project contributes to the creation of a single transport corridor from Beijing to London.

Turkey's ambassador to Cairo, who was recalled to Ankara due to deteriorating Turkish-Egyptian relations, will return to Egypt today, Hürriyet newspaper reported on Wednesday.

Ambassador Huseyin Avni Botsali was recalled from Cairo on August 16 for consultations. In response, Egypt recalled its Ambassador to Ankara Abdurrahman Salahaddin.
