At least two civilians were killed and six people injured Wednesday by a car bomb outside a foreign forces compound in eastern Afghanistan, police said, dpa reported.

"The attacker detonated his explosives-loaded vehicle at the gate of an airport that is used as the coalition troops' base, killing two civilian drivers and injuring six passers-by in a suburban area of Khost city," the capital of the province with the same name, police official Yaqub Khan told dpa.

The NATO-led military confirmed the incident took place "at the vicinity of Camp Chapman in Khost province."


A serviceman from the Georgian peacekeeping contingent went missing in Afghanistan, the Georgian Defence Ministry said on Thursday.

According to the report, no one has seen him since Dec.19.

The Defence Ministry reported that the serviceman went missing under mysterious circumstances. At present, the International Security Assistance Force is holding an operation to rescue him.

The family of the missing soldier has been already informed. However, his name has not been disclosed in the interest of the case.

Some 1600 Georgian servicemen serve within ISAF in Afghanistan.


Iran has reopened its consulate in the Afghan city of Herat, a week after it was reported closed following anti-Iranian protests outside the compound, the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman said, Reuters reported.

The demonstrators were protesting against the alleged killing of Afghan migrants by Iranian police, an assertion Tehran has denied.

Iran's state news agency IRNA reported on December 11 that Iran had shut the consulate.


US Defence Secretary Leon Panetta on Thursday said that Afghan President Hamid Karzai will meet US President Barack Obama in January to discuss the US troop presence in his country after 2014, dpa reported.

Panetta, on the second day of his unannounced visit to Afghanistan, met with Karzai at the president's fortified palace in Kabul to talk about the US troop withdrawal. During that session, he invited Karzai to the US capital on behalf of Obama.


Afghan security forces took on more security duties in the country and violence in heavily populated areas declined notably during the six months ending September 30, a report released Monday on progress in Afghanistan shows, dpa reported.

The status report said security improved in urban areas generally and in most parts of Afghanistan's five most populous districts, the report said.


Iran sent a note of protest to Afghanistan over events that took place in front of the country's consulate in Herat, Iranian IRNA news agency quotes a source at the country's Foreign Ministry as saying on Tuesday.

Three rockets were fired into Afghanistan's capital early Tuesday but no casualties were reported, an official said.

Two projectiles landed in a neighbourhood where the National Olympic Committee and a private television station are located, city police chief General Ayub Salangi said.

A third rocket hit a residential area in the east of the city, dpa reported.

The weapons were fired from Deh Sabz district just outside Kabul, police said.

No one took responsibility for the attack.


Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari Tuesday assured the visiting Afghan peace envoy of his country's strong support for the reconciliation process in the war-ravaged country, Xinhua reported.

Salahuddain Rabbani, Chairman of Afghan Peace Council, called on President Zardari on the second day of his visit and they discussed peace process in Afghanistan, regional situation and bilateral relations, presidential spokesman Farhatullah Babar said.
