U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel thanked Azerbaijani Defense Minister Safar Abiyev for his country's support to efforts in Afghanistan, including the sustained deployment of Azerbaijani forces with the International Security Assistance Force, Pentagon Press Secretary George Little said, said in statement on official website of Pentagon.

In a statement summarizing the meeting, Little said Hagel also thanked Abiyev for the valuable role Azerbaijan plays in providing ground, air and sea transit access for logistical support to Afghanistan.

A roadside bomb in the eastern Afghan province of Nangarhar injured 16 people Sunday, an official said, a day after an attack near the Indian consulate left nine civilians dead, dpa reported.

"The bomb was placed at a roadside in Jalalabad city, and was detonated remotely when the provincial prosecutor Abdul Qayyoum's vehicle was passing," said Ahmad Zia Abdulzai, a spokesman for the provincial governor.

Qayyoum, his driver, four bodyguards, and 10 civilians were injured in the "very powerful" explosion, Abdulzai said.

Iranian Embassy in Kabul issued a statement on Monday strongly criticizing provocative articles published by Afghan 8 oclock daily against Iran, IRNA reported.

The Islamic Republic of Iran has always supported the stability, security and territorial integrity of Afghanistan and has spared no effort to cooperate with Afghan government in this regard, the statement read.

The Embassy also criticized the Afghan daily for refusing to publish Iranian Embassys response to allegations made against Iran, a conduct which runs counter to the internationally-recognized press code.

At least three people including a NATO soldier were killed and three others injured Tuesday in two separate attacks in eastern Afghanistan, officials said, dpa reported.

"An explosives-rigged bicycle was remotely detonated, killing a police officer and an officer of the National Directorate of Security (intelligence agency) in a suburb of Jalalabad city," capital of Nangahar, the province's police spokesman Hazrat Hussain said.

The victims were on a motorbike going to work, he said.

Afghanistan has announced the details of the gas agreement with Turkmenistan, signed within the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) gas pipeline project in Ashgabat last week.

This contract was signed between Afghan Gas and Turkmen Gas companies and the Ministries of Mines and Petroleum of Afghanistan and Turkmenistan, the Afghan Foreign Ministry said today.

The signing of this contract is considered as a fundamental and practical step towards implementing the TAPI Project through which Afghanistan will address its gas needs for the next 30 years, the statement said.

Peace and stability in Central Asia region depends on development of the situation in Afghanistan, Foreign Ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) believe, the Kyrgyz Foreign Ministry reported.

Such a statement was made within the SCO Foreign Ministers council meeting in Kyrgyz city of Cholpan Ata on Saturday.

The meeting participants noted that the UN plays the central role in international efforts aimed at resolution of the situation in Afghanistan and supported desire of the Afghan people to restore the peace and revive the country.

Afghan Foreign Ministry spokesman Janan Mosazai on Sunday termed Tehran-Kabul ties as brotherly and friendly, saying Iran-Afghan relations are unique in the region, IRNA reported.

He made the remarks in his weekly press conference in Kabul.

Referring to abundant cultural, religious and language affinities between the two countries, Mosazai called for enhanced bilateral ties during the new Iranian Presidents tenure.

He appreciated Irans support for Afghan government and its principled stand on peace talks in Afghanistan.

At least 14 people including 13 police officers were killed and 15 others injured Friday in two suicide attacks in southern Afghanistan, officials said, dpa reported.

"A suicide bomber entered a police reserve base in Trinkot city, detonating his explosives, which killed 12 police and injured five," said Abdullah Hemmat, spokesman for the governor of Uruzgan province.

The incident took place at 12:00 pm (0730 GMT) when the policemen were eating lunch, and it was not clear how the bomber entered the base, he said.

President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev has today received Afghanistan`s Internal Affairs Minister Ghulam Mujtaba Patang.

The Afghan Minister conveyed President Hamid Karzai`s greetings to the Azerbaijani President.

The Head of State and the Interior Minister praised Azerbaijan-Afghanistan relations, saying the two countries also enjoyed good cooperation on different fronts.

They pointed out there were ample opportunities for developing the bilateral cooperation between internal affairs bodies.

The Afghan government said on Sunday it was willing to send a delegation to Qatar for peace talks with the Taliban if it received an explanation how the group was allowed to open an office in Doha similar to an embassy, using it formal name and flag, dpa reported.

"Afghan government remains fully committed to pursue a process of peace negotiations with the armed opposition, including the Taliban, but within the confines of the conditions and the principles and the assurances that we have established," Foreign Ministry spokesman Janan Musazai told reporters in Kabul.
