An attacker wearing an Afghan army uniform shot dead three NATO soldiers in the east of Afghanistan on Saturday, the military coalition said in a statement, dpa reported.

NATO and Afghan officials were "assessing the incident to determine the facts," it added, giving no further details.

General Zahir Azimi, the spokesman for the Afghan Defence Ministry, confirmed the incident which he said took place in Gardez city, the provincial capital of Paktia.

He said it was not immediately clear whether the individual was a Taliban insurgent in disguise or a member of the Afghan army.


A prominent Taliban commander who was the group's shadow governor in a northern Afghan district was killed along with 10 colleagues, Afghanistan's Ministry of Interior said Saturday, dpa reported.

"Mohebbullah, also called as Moheb Lang (Moheb the Lame), was killed along with two other insurgents' commanders, two suicide bombers and six foreign citizens in a special operation launched by Afghan security forces," the ministry said in a statement.


The United Nations and the international community will fully support Afghanistan after the 2014 withdrawal of NATO combat troops, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said, dpa reported.

Ban said late Tuesday the strengthening of Afghan national security forces and the planned presidential election in April were the most important milestones next year and "we are committed to support your difficult challenges."

President Hamid Karzai has run the country since the ouster of the Taliban in 2001 but is constitutionally barred from running again.


A meeting of the regional technical groups on realization of the Action Plan on confidence-building measures and the development of regional infrastructure within the framework of Istanbul process on Afghanistan was held in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan on Tuesday under the chairmanship of the Turkmen side, Turkmen Foreign Affairs Ministry's report released by the embassy of Turkmenistan in Azerbaijan said.


The army is engaged in ensuring security of foreign investments in Afghanistan. Currently, national forces carry out this process by 80 percent, Minister of Mines and Petroleum of the Republic of Afghanistan Wahidullah Shahrani said in an interview with Trend.

Azerbaijan will likely participate in the construction of small refineries in Afghanistan, Minister of Industry and Energy Natig Aliyev said during a meeting with the delegation led by Afghanistan's Minister of Mines Wahidullah Shahrani.

According to Aliyev, currently Afghanistan carries out good work on restoring its economy and Azerbaijan is ready to participate in these processes.

"Relations between the two countries should not be confined to trade. We should develop new spheres of cooperation and increase investments," Aliyev said.


Azerbaijan and Afghanistan are preparing to sign a memorandum of understanding in the sphere of energy, Azerbaijani Minister of Industry and Energy Natig Aliyev told journalists on Wednesday after a meeting with Afghanistan's Minister of Mines Wahidullah Shahrani.

According to him, the document which is considered to become 'a road map' of cooperation between the two countries' ministries is planned to be signed in November in Kabul.


In one of his strongest remarks against the Taliban, Afghan President Hamid Karzai condemned Saturday evening the attacks that killed scores of people over the last two days, dpa reported.

At least 31 people have been killed since Friday in four separate security incidents across the country.

Karzai called the attacks "acts of terror" and "mass killings."

"Taliban leaders and their commanders will be held accountable before the Afghan Muslim nation," Karzai said in a statement by his palace.


The ministry of education of Afghanistan expressed concerns regarding the casualties of education employees and administrators in Afghanistan and said around 100 of them have been killed since the beginning of the year, khaama press reported

This comes as three local education administrators were killed in northern Parwan province, southern Uruzgan and western Herat province of Afghanistan by unknown gunmen.
