Turkmenistan scheduled the launch of the first national satellite for late 2014, the Neutral Turkmenistan newspaper reported.

At present, French company Thales Alenia Space, which won a tender, is engaged in the development and construction of the spacecraft, under the contract signed with the Turkmen government.

In the Turkmen market, Thales is known as a developer and supplier of advanced high-tech aeronavigation equipment for the country's airports since 1991.

A Turkmen delegation will participate in the sixth World Future Energy Summit that will be held in the capital of the UAE, Abu Dhabi from January 15-17, the Turkmen government announced today.

The annual event is put on by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and the Emirati government.

The agenda includes energy security, alternative energy development, the use of renewable energy sources, and the active introduction of so-called "clean technologies" in various sectors and industries.

The issue of establishing new gas-chemical complexes was considered at the last government meeting in Ashgabat, an official Turkmen source said today.

The construction of polyethylene production complexes at Seidi refinery (East Region) and at the coast of the Caspian Sea (western region), near the settlement Kiyanly, where the marine terminal for liquefied natural gas storage and shipment is located, are among the projects.

Chairman of the National Hydrometeorology Committee under the Turkmen government Batyr Khallyev has been appointed as the country's representative to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), an official Turkmen source said.

Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhammadov signed the relevant decree.
On these days Khallyev is scheduled to visit the city of Exeter and Reading in the UK to get acquainted with the work of leading meteorological services of Europe.

Turkmen President Gurbanguli Berdimuhamedow met with the Vice President of Thales Michel Ricard, the Turkmen government reported on Wednesday.

The meeting focused on the progress of the project on establishment of a national satellite in Turkmenistan, the launch of which is scheduled for 2014. In addition, the report stated that the head of Thales expressed willingness to provide innovative solutions in the field of aerospace technology.

They also exchanged views on cooperation in the field of civil aviation and the further development of a mutually beneficial partnership.
