The administrative center of Sughd Province of Tajikistan, the city of Khujand, hosted the fourth trade fair “Sughd 2017.” This traditional event is intended to demonstrate the achievements of the region, which has been recognized as the most economically developed province of the country. The event is also a platform for development of international cooperation in the field of investment and business.



The lower house of the Tajik parliament has ratified the agreement on the modernization of the Kairakkum HPP. As reported by the Tajik Telegraph Agency, adding the project for rehabilitation of the Kairakkum HPP will be implemented in two phases. The agreement directly envisages launching the first phase of this project, which has an estimated total cost of $71 million. The funds will be allocated by the EBRD (European Bank for Reconstruction and Development of Technical Assistance).



Tajikistan plans to issue government securities worth a total of $1 billion to be sold in the international financial markets. Such a proposal of the government of the republic was approved by the deputies of the lower house of the national parliament on June 20. According to Deputy Minister of Finance Jamshed Nurmahmadien, this case is about raising financial resources for the strategic project that involves construction of the Rogun HPP.



Tajikistan and Armenia intend to create a working group to study the trade potential of the two countries, which will help expand mutual trade. Minister of Investments and Economic Development of Armenia Suren Karayan announced this news on the sidelines of the meeting of the Armenian-Tajik intergovernmental commission. According to him, it is also planned to create a number of distribution companies that will organize the import and export of products, and establish industrial cooperation in the light industry and the jewelry field.



The capital of Tajikistan has hosted an international high-level symposium on the theme “Strengthening cooperation in achieving sustainable development in the context of current challenges and threats.” At the opening ceremony of this event President Emomali Rahmon said that the strengthening of cooperation in the process of achieving the goals of sustainable development was closely linked with the joint initiatives aimed at ensuring sustainable peace and eliminating the current threats.



The JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) will allocate $3.9 million dollars (356 million yen) for the second phase of the project for modernization of the Dushanbe international airport. According to the press service of the Ministry of Finance of the Republic, from the Tajik side, the document was signed by head of the department Abdusalom Kurboniyon. From the Japanese side, it was signed by head of the JICA office in Tajikistan Hideki Tanabe.


Tajikistan and the United Arab Emirates will create a joint Investment Fund and the Commercial Council. This news was announced following the recent Dushanbe-based meeting of Tajik President Emomali Rahmon with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Abdullo bin Zayyid Oli Nahyan. These structures are necessary for the development and strengthening of economic, investment and trade cooperation between the two countries, for strengthening inter-parliamentary cooperation, as well as creating inter-parliamentary friendship groups.


Before the end of 2018, Tajikistan plans to put into operation three units of the Rogun HPP. Deputy chairman of the Budget and Economy Committee of the lower chamber of the parliament of the republic, Bahodur Akramzoda, made such a statement. Akramzoda recently visited the construction site of the hydroelectric power station, accompanying President Emomali Rahmon. In his words, 200 specialists are currently performing erection works on the first two units of the HPP.



During the recent meeting in China, the SCO hosted a discussion on the draft strategy for the development of Tajikistan until 2030. This event was organized by the Embassy of Tajikistan in China together with the SCO Secretariat and attended by about 60 representatives of business circles, the diplomatic corps and the scientific community of China and Tajikistan. SCO Secretary-General Rashid Alimov noted in his welcoming speech that the adoption of this strategic document would determine the future direction of continuous development of Tajikistan.



This year, the size of Tajikistan's external debt continues to grow. It was $2.274 billion at the beginning of January, but the total amount increased by another $10 million by April 1. Of this amount, $2.1 billion is directly attributable to public debt; the amount of debt with a state guarantee is $23.3 million. The largest ammount of Tajikistan's loans accounts for the World Bank ($294 million), followed by the Asian Development Bank ($225 million), the Islamic Development Bank ($110 million), and the International Monetary Fund ($108 million).
