The 14th Eurasian Media Forum took place in the capital of Kazakhstan. The event began on June 22 and ended on June 24. More than 500 delegates representing 60 countries of the world took part in the 2017 forum. Together they discussed the topical issues for the entire world community, such as: the Syrian crisis, the concept of “green economy,” security in social networks and information attacks.


On June 22, the upper chamber of the Kazakh parliament (the Senate) approved the draft law “On Amendments and Additions to Some Legislative Acts of Kazakhstan Concerning the Issues of Their Compliance with the Constitution of the Country” in the first reading. This document provides for the possibility of deprivation of citizenship as a punishment for committing particularly serious crimes, including terrorism-related ones. The purpose of the draft law is to bring the current legislative acts in line with the recent amendments to the republic's constitution.


In 2016, Kazakhstan registered a total of 16,823 emergency cases. More than 1,600 people were injured, and the number of victims was 3,691 people. Speaker of the upper house of the parliament Kasym-Zhomart Tokayev voiced this information on June 21. He delivered his speech to the deputies during the parliamentary hearings on the development of civil protection in Kazakhstan.



The lower chamber of the Kazakh parliament (the Majilis) has approved the ratification of the protocol, according to which Kyrgyzstan will receive the first tranche of the previously planned assistance (amounting to $100 million). Worth recalling, the parliament had approved the ratification of an agreement for the provision of the specified amount to the neighboring state. This assistance will be provided to the Kyrgyz side for implementation of the set of measures envisaged in the framework of the Road Maps for the Accession of Kyrgyzstan to the EEU.



As compared with the 2016 figure, Kazakhstan has seen a 41 percent increase in the total number of its three saiga populations. Acting chairman of the Committee of Wildlife and Forestry under the Ministry of Agriculture Marlene Ainabekov reported this information during the recent press conference in Astana. “This year, the lambing of saiga was successful. In early May 2017, we conducted a survey of saigas. According to its results, their total number was 152,000 heads.


The upper chamber of the Kazakh parliament (the Senate) has passed a law on the Prosecutor's Office, which cuts down the grounds for prosecutor's inspections. According to the Prosecutor General, Zhakip Asanov, the tasks and principles of the work of the prosecutor's office remain the same as before: observing the rule of law and protecting the rights of citizens. However, general supervision will not be unlimited now. It will have three forms: verification, analysis and evaluation of legal acts. According to him, there will be no more endless inspections.



The law “On Amendments and Additions to Some Constitutional Laws of Kazakhstan” was signed by the President of the Republic Nursultan Nazarbayev. The press service of the head of state reported the news on June 15. The purpose of this document is to bring the current constitutional laws into line with the amendments to the Constitution. In particular, the law “On Elections” will introduce additional requirements to candidates for the post of the country's president.


As of today, Kazakhstan needs additional medical facilities and other specialized institutions designed for the compulsory treatment of alcoholics. Minister of Internal Affairs Kalmukhanbet Kasymov expressed this opinion during his meeting with the population on June 14. In addition, he noted that almost every seventh crime committed in the republic, almost 50 percent of all murders and over 60 percent of all family and domestic crimes are committed in a state of intoxication.



The Minister of Labor and Social Protection of the Population of Kazakhstan, Tamara Duisenova, has proposed to introduce the executive instructions on the facts of non-payment of salaries, which will speed up the procedure for collection of debts. This happened during the government meeting on June 13. She appealed to the Ministry of Justice with a request to consider the inclusion of the executive instructions for labor inspectors regarding the facts of non-payment of wages.



After the talks held in Astana between President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev and the head of the People's Republic of China, Xi Jinping, who had arrived in the republic on an official visit, a total of 12 joint documents were signed, including a joint statement. During the meeting, the parties discussed a number of issues, including cooperation in the transport sector, energy and agriculture.
