In 2017-2018, Kazakhstan will be a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, as reported by the official site of the UN News Center. In order to be elected, Kazakhstan needed to get 129 out of 193 votes, or two-thirds majority of the General Assembly. Kazakhstan, being located in the Asia-Pacific group, managed to get ahead of its rival Thailand, receiving 138 votes at the final voting. In the first round of voting, Kazakhstan received 117 votes, and Thailand got 77 votes.
