On April 27, a regular meeting of the Kyrgyz parliament elected a new speaker by a majority vote of deputies. The position went to Chynybay Tursunbekov, leader of the Social Democratic Party (the “presidential” party). This election was a result of the secret ballot, in which 88 deputies voted in favor of Tursunbekov. The new speaker has recently turned 55 years old, and he has been twice elected as a deputy of the national parliament. Chynybay Tursunbekov is a candidate of philological sciences; he had previously worked as a journalist.
